I thought I’d formally ask Heritage Victoria their position on this ugly monstrosity that they had approved.
I received this reply
“We are of the view that the finish is appropriate and ties in with the finish of other service hatches and inset infrastructure associated with the project. Consideration of other options took place with the conclusion being that a painted finish will raise additional maintenance issues and cladding the cover and surround in sawn bluestone or similar would increase the weight and visual presence of the access hatch. “
Mind boggling
Feel free to ask forclarification from the author. Her name is Nicole Smith and her email is Heritage.Victoria@transport.vic.gov.au
One wonders if there is a conflict of interests for this lady. Email being at transport victoria
Did she should step out at the approval decision making time?

The hatch could have easily be incorporated into the bluestone paving at the same level. I wonder if Heritage Victoria has made any valuable input into the project. It’s all a done deal now.
