Letterboxes – update

You will have noticed that we have started the work to relocate our letterboxes to a safer location inside, near the lifts.  The premium boxes did not match our expectations and the flaps do not close as smoothly as we expected.  The supplier has agreed to replace the entire bank of boxes.  This will take another ten days

Thanks for your patience

BTW – Apartments in Albert Rd had their letterboxes broken into last weekend

Action out the front of Botanica

CaptureBe careful tomorrow there will be some CYP work happening on our doorstop tomorrow.  You should have received details in your mailbox – here is a  copy

Bottom line is that they need to dig up our footpath (again!) to relocate some high voltage cables and need to install a covered walkway.

Access will be maintained but a little different – for walkers and drivers, so be careful

The Tram Whisperer

Who is this unmasked man in a high vis vest??  It seems he is the man who is the key guy for fixing tram squeal on the Yarra Tram Network.

This was him back in April 2018 just after Rail Projects Victoria had moved the tram tracks in St Kilda Rd when they had somehow turned silent tracks into something terrible.

Now SEVEN months later, he is out there checking that their special new ‘friction modifier’ has been installed correctly.  This is him earlier in the week

It is certainly better but not quite  right – do the tanks run dry, does the rain wash it off??

If you recognise him please pass on my thanks

Don’t even think of speeding – in your tram

P1220820

As many of you know we have been working with Yarra Trams and RPV to sort out the tram squeal in St Kilda Rd.  The special goo is being squirted on the tram wheels and it has improved things, not fixed it but improved things.

Yarra Trams also has a reduced speed limit along this section of St Kilda Rd (Between Park St and Toorak Rd).  These gents were out today checking that the drivers weren’t speeding!

Have you noticed any improvement in the tram squeal noise??

Great grey hope??

This small grey box may become the friend of many people in Melbourne living near tram tracks.  During the  Metro Tunnel work for the new Anzac (Domain?) Station, new tram tracks were installed that had a terrible squeal – after a lot of debate and numerous studies, a solution has been found.

It involves applying a ‘friction modifier’ onto the tracks.  During August, tests were carried out by manually ‘painting’ this emulsion on the tracks and it made a significant difference.  But the only issue is that it needs to be applied every 15 minutes or thereabouts.

Hence the grey box – when complete by early next week, it contains the gear (and tank) to spray the emulsion on the wheels of passing trams.  The one above is in St Kilda Rd, near Toorak Rd.  The photo below is the site of the one that will capture southbound trams and is in St Kilda Rd, near Park St.  That should be completed on Sunday night

Why is it good news for all??  It seems if this works well then it can also be deployed on other noisy sections of tram track around the network.

Info from CYP presented at The Botanica AGM

Lots of good information here but I think the main piece of critical info is the broad notification of the worst time ahead for us.  You can see that the worst time will likely be April – June 2019.  This involves putting the ‘lid’ back on to the ‘southern box’ outside The Botanica.

The date may slip but given the following step involves moving the tram lines…and that can only be done in school holidays (eg July), I think the broad window won’t move much.

It was great having good attendance from CYP and The Botanica, thanks all

Good new on cigarette butts

After some gentle prodding from The Botanica and others, Cross Yarra Partnership (CYP) have managed to convince the City of Port Phillip to install a temporary bin outside 390 St Kilda Rd for cigarette butts.

I understand that they have refused to erect goal posts for the guys who kick a footy out there each day – all quite reasonable.
