Updated – St Kilda Rd closure

You may have noticed an electronic sign in front of 412 St Kilda Rd advertising that St Kilda Rd will be closed 9am-4pm on Thursday this week.

I understand that it is for tree pruning to ease the journey for the TBM from South Yarra back to our acoustic box that will happen later this year.

Hopefully resident access will be maintained.

I’m guessing that they will not prune our magnificent trees, fingers crossed.

Late update from CYP

There will be trees trimmed along St Kilda Road along the TBM transport route for the entire day tomorrow as the crews progressively move their way up St Kilda Road.

There wasn’t originally going to be a full northbound closure – however it appears we will in fact close a section between Park Street and Dorcas Street, however not from 9am-4pm.

There are roughly 3 trees to be trimmed in this section and the detour will be via Park-Wells-Dorcas. It’s likely that it will be closed from 9am for roughly 2 hours.

Local traffic/deliveries can still get into the closed section.

Once this section is finished St Kilda Road will be back open – however sections of the outer carriage way will progressively be closed between Dorcas and Linlithgow as the crews work their way up St Kilda Road.

The inner carriageway will remain open the entire time and we’ll maintain local building access and side street access via TC’s

Apologies – The VMS certainly makes it seem much more extreme than it actually is – I’ll get some advice out tomorrow (with a map of the Park to Dorcas section) to the mailing list in the event that others are confused about it.

I’ll see if I can get that VMS changed too

As a side note – You might be wondering why we’re trimming tree’s on that side of the road for TBM transportation.
The answer is that we’ve got 6 over height deliveries that are too tall to come down Toorak Road under tram lines and will instead need to come down the opposite side of St Kilda Road to get back into site.

(This way we only need to raise 3 sets of tram lines at Toorak Road, St Kilda Road/Linlithgow and St Kilda Road/Park Street

Below is a map that shows the route – though the red line on SKR needs to be updated to move to the other side of the road.

CYP Update

ANZAC STATION WEEKLY LOOK AHEAD 

Tunnelling 

Works will carry on as normal inside the acoustic shed. Currently, tunnelling is progressing well and the first TBM Millie is now past Punt Road, with Alice not far behind.

Anzac Station entrance – Shrine of Remembrance 

CFA piling for the Shine of Remembrance station entrance was completed last weekend. This week, excavators arrived on site to begin work with trucks starting to haul out material. This excavation will be continuing over the coming weeks as the team excavate down to a depth of approximately 10m. The team will progressively excavate down and break back redundant sections of the exposed piles. There will be some periods of high level noise during these works, as a rough guide there will be approximately two days of excavation followed by two days of pile break back. In addition, the area will be shotcreted as excavation continues. Shotcreting involves a spray-on application of concrete that acts as a support for the exposed ground.

Middle Box Roof Construction 

We continue to prepare the final section of the Anzac Station Roof. Steel fixing and reinforcement works are continuing in the middle box area that will form the roof slab. We are currently planning a concrete pour for the roof slab in mid-September. More details on this will be in next week’s lookahead.  

Middle Box Excavation 

The excavation for this first phase of works is progressing well. Next week the team will continue loading out the excavated material that has been stockpiled under the roof over the past few weeks. This load out of material will likely take all of next week, with the potential of work happening in the week following.

In addition to this, starting tomorrow until the end of next week support strutting at the southern end of the box will be installed. After that, the team will recommence digging for another four days.

We’ve attached a picture of the concourse level excavation to this email, so you can see what has been happening underneath St Kilda Road.

St Kilda Rd ugliness

At the AGM the other night there was a lot of discussion on the proposed Chiller Plants that will form part of the final look on St Kilda Rd. The plants will be immediately in front of The Botanica / Bowen Crescent.

I am staggered that these massive structures could be approved on a heritage boulevard. What is Heritage Victoria thinking?? I know there is talk of beautifying / hiding them / disguising them but look at the size next to a tram…nothing can hide that!

By the way they will run 24 hours a day and produce noise…how noisy??

There will be a public consultation period later in the year – hopefully commonsense will prevail but it seems unlikely. I will keep you posted.

There will also be some vents and while they are not great, the options are more limited for their location. See the images of them below.

The company that did the work has modelled the info as best they could from the limited information that RPV / CYP have provided. I am very confident that the size and location are correct.

ANZAC STATION WEEKLY LOOK AHEAD 

Please be aware that Monday is an RDO. Tunnelling will continue, but there will no other civil works on Monday.

Tunnelling 

Works will carry on as normal inside the acoustic shed. Currently, tunnelling is progressing well and the first TBM Millie is now past Punt Road, with Alice not far behind.

Anzac Station entrance – Shrine of Remembrance 

CFA piling around the perimeter of the new station entrance will be completed tomorrow. Once this is done, the piling rig will be dismantled and removed from site. This means that we will be able to start excavation of the station entrance next week. At the moment, this looks likely to commence on Wednesday or Thursday. We will be bringing in a couple of excavators to site to complete this work. These first stages of excavation are not expected to be too disruptive.

Middle Box Roof Construction 

We continue to prepare the final section of the Anzac Station roof. As we mentioned last week, the temporary deck has been installed that we’ll use to support the pour of the final section of the roof. We’ve also laid form ply on top, which the roof slab will be cast against. Now, we are installing the steel reinforcements that will form the roof slab. As part of this, the team will be completing some hammer drilling into the roof slab to post fix steel reinforcements. This has been happening today, and will continue into tomorrow and next week.

Middle Box Excavation 

Excavation under the roof slab and load out continues as we near completion. The excavation to concourse level is expected to be complete by the end of next week. As outlined in the August construction notification, works will carry on until 10pm under the roof slab next week. This will be limited to work under the roof to push excavated material up to the void, ready for removal the next day. Because of the reduced activity under the roof, the additional ventilation system will not be used during these extended work hours.

Once the excavation is complete, we will prepare and commence the installation of minor strutting at the southern end of the station box. The crawler crane will lower the steel and other equipment through the void to the team working underground.

Does the sound treatment work?

The latest story on the sound treatment from CYP…

Afternoon all,

As I said to Gary in an earlier email, the unit was measuring up to 75 dB when it was first installed. We’ve since put the matting in around the engine bay that is generating the actual noise – which I appreciate is not visually spectacular compared to the size of the unit.

More importantly, we’ve focussed on less visible efforts that actually make a bigger difference.

The maintenance on the machine has been closely monitored to ensure that the filter is cleaned out more regularly and the unit doesn’t have to work as hard.
We’ve also progressively adjusted the unit so that it only works as hard as it needs to in order to achieve the air quality underground.

At installation it was working at 100% – it is now operating between 70-80% and still achieving the results we need below ground.

The current noise levels are around 69-70dB.

I raised the issue this morning in our construction meeting and everyone is aware that the unit is causing issues and should only be used for as long as it is absolutely required.

So after getting this email I thought I’d listen and see if I can hear the difference. The video goes for 38 seconds, the start is before anything had been done, the next section is with the sound treatment and the final section after they have reduced the way the machine is operating….there is a blue banner between each.

As I said…

At the AGM last night I mentioned that CYP were going to put some sound proofing up around that noisy piece of plant out the front. They have done it today.

I must say that it is not quite what I expected…

Yep – those blue panels are the soundproofing!?!?!

Important Metro Tunnel updates

I have various bits of important news…

Street trees

When this is all done we will be getting street trees back out the front…but it seemed like for some reason, it was decided that we’d rather have one less tree.

The gap that was to be left was in case the City of Port Phillip decided to put a bike hoop in there one day.

I didn’t out to popular vote in the building but I decided on my own that people would rather an elm than a bike rack.

Today I was told by Rob Mair…Alan and his team have come up with a configuration to get the full quota of trees back in front of Botanica. While it still needs final approval from Heritage Victoria, we have checked in with HV who have indicate that they have no issues with reinstating the tree that was removed between the Development Plan design and the Interim Design.

Vibration

The special bits of equipment have now been installed in the plant on Edmund Herring Oval and they are hoping it will have a positive impact on the terrible vibration.

Trucks

We are getting fewer trucks as most are now going on the agreed routes. Still quite a few speeding but certinaly fewer trucks.

Noisy ventilation unit

People on the front of the building will have noticed a massive ventilation unit that has recently appeared. It pumps fresh air into the station box but it is VERY noisy. They have agreed to install sound mats around it tomorrow morning.
